On The Platform,
color subway photographs by Daryl-Ann Saunders
In the weeks following September 11th, 2001, I walked streets of New York City late at night,
and looked up, in awe, at its tall monoliths of buildings. Newly aware of their grand yet vulnerable
majesty I felt compelled to express homage to some indelible aspect of this City I love. I began
photographing subway platforms at night, initially in Brooklyn, and this evolved into my current
ongoing series, On The Platform. I now travel to different cities to
continue this series of work.
Where transit systems interrupt and interfere with the landscape, I photographically explore
the tenuous relationship between manmade structure, community and nature. I take on the role
of photographic architect to express new constructs of architecture. Themes of deconstruction,
reconstruction and re-creation are active in this imagery.
